Collage + Frottage Workshop with Jesús Oviedo

This hands-on workshop for adults who work with children will include an introduction to repurposed materials, a brief overview on mark-making and examples from preschool programs and ideas that you can do at home using both commonplace drawing materials and atypical materials that will be introduced. The knowledge and techniques obtained from the workshop can be used with children 2 and up, for adults, including but not limited to preschool educators, artists, parents.

Frottage involves finding textures in our everyday surroundings, everyday objects and surfaces, and using drawing materials and paper to record textures and patterns.  Collage involves cutting the frottage pieces, looking for new meaning and associations through playing with the materials, and eventually gluing into completed collages.

Jesús Oviedo is an artist-educator, administrator and Early Childhood consultant. He received his Masters in Fine art from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2002. He worked as a Studio Coordinator for 17 years for the preschools of the Reggio-Inspired Chicago Commons Early Childhood program. In this role he partnered with children and educators in their research and provided professional development through a Reggio-Inspired lens. Jesús has consulted with Early Childhood classrooms, schools and programs across the US on pedagogy, collaboration and hands-on experiences with materials that foster creativity and high-level questioning. Jesús contributed a chapter to the recently published book Affirming the Rights of Emergent Bilingual and Multilingual Children and Families Interweaving Research and Practice through the Reggio Emilia Approach
