What is QAYG???

Quilt as you Go!

In traditional quilting, the entire top layer is constructed first, then attached to the batting filler and to the backing fabric. It needs a lot of space, a lot of time, and usually a very precise pattern.

The Quilt As You Go (QAYG) method is more spontaneous and flexible. The piecing and designing is done directly onto filler (batting) using small pieces and these can be sewn together into a larger quilt bed covering -- or into a variety of other end products like coasters, pot holders, tote bags, pillows, lap blankets, and more.  You don't need to have a big space to work on it and the design you create will be more spontaneous, not necessarily as geometric, and can use up lots of different small scraps of material.

And if you've been to CCRx Warehouse, you know that we have a LOT of that to choose from!

How do I learn QUAG?

The workshop will cover basic sewing techniques that simplify joining and quilting fabric pieces. You'll start with small blocks, then grow to a larger pieces.

"Traditional quilting has more finessing steps, but the QUAG method is more down and dirty and gets you to a finished products faster," says artist Kathryn Trumbull Fimreite. " You can make a pillow pretty fast!"

At the workshop, she'll assess how much sewing experience participants have and if folks are newbies, practice stitching and piecing together, then think about how to make it a finished item. For more experienced quilters, the warehouse is full of fabric to choose from and we'll have several machines set up to use.

Kathryn is an experienced QUAG quilter as well as the designer of many of CCRx's creative reuse products and kits --- she is a patient teacher who is also very creative and experimental with materials and techniques. Check out her website for a sampling of her own artwork and our website for some of the creative reuse products and kits that she has designed.

It's a great time to give QUAG a try -- and set yourself up for a quilting project to keep you engaged and enveloped over the winter months!
